Two names for one mode is the first thing to untangle. Older guides call it Endless Mode, the 1.0 announcement calls it Challenge Mode and says so in the same sentence, and the mode itself is reached from Extras rather than from the story menu.
What the mode actually is
The launch announcement frames it as the answer for “innkeepers looking to put their management skills to the test beyond the main story”. The launch FAQ says the same thing in fewer words.
That framing is the reliable part: it is a management challenge that sits outside the twelve-chapter campaign. It is not a second story, and the narrative content of 1.0 — chapters 10 to 12 — belongs to Story Mode.
What its own update established
The mode was reworked in October 2025, while it was still called Endless Mode. Those notes are the only detailed description of its structure in the material checked here:
| Element | What the October 2025 update said |
|---|---|
| Scope | 10 stages sharing a single theme |
| Scoring | Final rank determined by overall progress across all 10 weeks |
| Rewards | A rotating weekly pool: skill upgrades, character tokens and new facilities |
| Re-rolls | A re-roll feature, plus the option to buy all three weekly reward slots if tokens allow |
| Opening state | Basic inn installations only; further options unlock as you progress |
| Character actions | The Wisp offers special actions for main characters, four times across the ten weeks, in an order you choose |
Two design ideas stand out. The reward pool makes the mode a drafting problem rather than a fixed build, and the four special actions over ten weeks make timing a resource in the same way AP is in the story.
What 1.0 does and does not say
The 1.0 announcement renames the mode, keeps the Extras entry point, and leaves the rules alone. It does not restate the ten-stage structure, and it does not publish an unlock condition.
That gap matters if you are deciding whether to buy the game for this mode. The honest summary: the mode exists at 1.0, it is reached from Extras, it is aimed at players who have finished the story, and its detailed structure is documented from its own 2025 rework rather than from the 1.0 notes.
How it differs from Story Mode at a glance
| Question | Story Mode | Challenge Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | 12 chapters with weekly and monthly goals | 10 themed stages with a rank across all of them |
| Purpose | The campaign and its story | Repeated management tests |
| Entry | Continue or load a save | Extras menu |
| Length | Around 20 hours, publisher estimate | Per-run; a single theme spans ten stages |
| Story content | Chapters 10-12 conclude it | None described |
When to start it
If you are still learning the loop, the story teaches it in order: the lobby from chapter 2, parties from chapter 7, winter from chapter 10. Challenge Mode starts you with basic installations and expects you to build from there, so arriving with the story’s vocabulary already in place is far less punishing.
What is not published
Not the unlock condition, not the theme list, and not the ranking thresholds. This page deliberately stops at what the released notes establish rather than filling those gaps with plausible numbers.
